Thanks for the pics and the info Admiral...they really are beautiful little figures and the painting is superb. I will be there on Monday night to have a look at them :D

Hi Guys,
I have two relatively Large 15mm Armies for SYW, I use Age of Reason. Though the lads and I who use these have ammended them a little and use a different army list. I intend having a game next Sunday in my Garage and this will be potentially GB, Prussian, North German Union Vs Russian, Austrian, French. The games are usually 3 Divisions a side roughly 6-9 brigades each and is a good opportunity for having a look. People are more than welcome to pop along for a game.

Gents I seek words of wisdom and guidance, my first battalion of Austrian foot is painted and ready to glue onto bases, however I am in a dilemma my unit pack from fighting 15s has supplied me with two standard bearers, I have delved into my vast library of two books  and scoured the internet seeking guidance on which flags were used.

This should be fairly simple as there were basically two flags, the colonels (white) and the regimental flag (yellow) each regiment had two battalions (1st & 2nd) they were deployed with the 1st Battalion carrying the colonels flag, so does this mean that the 2nd Battalion carried the regimental flag? Or did each battalion carry two flags? :?

If two flags were carried by each battalion does the white flag go on the right and the yellow flag go on the left or vice versa (as you look at the unit???) :? :? :? wargaming shouldn’t be this complicated.

I've got a copy of Duffy's book on the Austrians, but it is in the loft, if you can give me a bit of time, however, off the top of my head I think there was also a green flag (Hungarian regts maybe?????) carried by some infantry, and I have a vague recollection that they might have carried two flags per battalion at this time :?:

Edit - some green flags may have been carried by the Hungarians during the War of the Austrian Succession

GMB sell their 28mm stuff as 1 Leib and 1 Ord for 1st battalion and 2 ord for 2nd battalion

This guy also says 4 flags per regt/2 per battalion

Dave
My rules of choice are ‘Die Kriegskunst’ from the General de Brigade school, however the recommended basing is for four figures on a 20 x 20mm base, this looks scruffy and cramped, so I am opting to base six figures in two ranks on a 40mm frontage base it looks better and with a 24 figure battalion this breaks down neatly into four bases handy for line, column etc.
Gary
Thanks for the links, I found one or two of them when I started looking, I would appreciate a look at your Duffy's book at some stage, I have painted a Dragoon and a Cuirassier regiment so far and am slowly getting into the Austrian infantry.

Ken, checked my books, and you can borrow the Duffy one anytime you like - definitely two flags per battalion with 1st battalion having one Lieb and one Ord and the 2nd battalion having two Ords (1749 regulation in force up until 1769 at least).

The Ensigns stood with the battalion command between the two centre companies when deployed in line, with the Liebfahne being on the right and the Ordinarfahne on the left (as we would look from behind the unit).
